With so many connections to technology and innovation, drones continue to positively impact STEM education. Two of the biggest benefits of drones in education include helping students to learn coding skills and helping to expose them to exciting future careers. And, though it may be surprising, not all educational drones are complex. In fact, the best drones for students are actually super easy for anybody to use. Beginning in upper elementary school, teachers can work with students and incorporate drone lessons in their classroom STEAM curriculum, as part of afterschool clubs, or in both. This helps students develop crucial 21st century skills, like coding, collaboration, computational thinking, and more. Plus, students can fly them indoors or outdoors and take on any challenges that are appropriate for them.
Perfect for computer science classes, programmable drones are quite valuable for 21st century learning. With solutions like the Tello EDU, RoboMaster TT, or RubiQ devices, students could completely control the flight paths and movements of their UAVs using code they create—perfectly combining two incredibly relevant areas of STEM. Plus, these drone kits are available as standalone units or as classroom-sized packs. And, some of these also include in-depth curriculum guides, professional development materials, and even safety training resources. With these components, middle school, high school, and CTE instructors can create all-new classes or additions to the STEM curriculum. In some parts of the country, school has already started, but for those who go back right before or right after Labor Day, there’s still some time to do some EdTech research and discover some new tech tools to potentially bring into the classroom for the new year! Here’s some suggestions for many different areas of STEM.
Among the newest STEM tools added to our store is the Airblock drone from Makeblock, an exceptional way for students to explore aviation and dive into long-lasting innovation. They don’t even need any prior coding experience to learn with Airblock—just an eye for exploration and the desire to take charge of their learning!
The various educational drone kits from OnPoynt are designed to allow for class-wide collaboration and getting your students innovating, 3D printing, and flying both in and outside the classroom safely and effectively. Plus, OnPoynt’s line of innovative and highly customizable drones take learning to new heights—both literally and figuratively.
We’re big fans of STEAM education. Like, really big fans. If you’re not familiar with what the A in STEAM stands for, or even the other four letters for that matter, STEM represents science, tech, engineering, and math with the A added in to represent art and create a more well-rounded 21st century education with opportunities for expression.
As personal drones become more popular, innovators have been working hard on developing new ways to use drone technology. One of the most popular uses for a drone today? A sophisticated, flying camera! That’s just one of the features that the subject of this week’s Eduporium Experiment, the Micro Drone, comes fully equipped with.
Remote-controlled (or RC) toys have been popular since the debut of the first RC car in the late 1960s. The newest RC toy on the market these days? Personal drones: little flying machines, often modeled after helicopters, with a set of propellers to keep them airborne. Light, easy to fly, and tons of fun, every kid (and adult!) these days
Innovations in technology, the ways in which we use technology and the tasks that technology helps us accomplish are constantly being updated and extensively innovated. With the Olympics finishing up earlier this week, we got to thinking of athletes being at the very top of their game and how exactly they are able to get there.
Whatever is the latest piece of technology adapted for the classroom, we’re working to sell teachers, schools and districts on the importance of making sure their students have access to it. Next up on the long list of innovative EdTech? Drones. When it comes to tapping and ballooning student creativity with technology, drones are certainly exciting options.
There are so many things that contemporary teachers have to account for and many of them—like personalizing learning, teaching coding and using technology—are still all very new. Luckily for them, we have a bunch of sound advice for helping to get today’s students ready for today’s increasingly complex world!
