The esports industry, beyond the high school and college levels, has been popularized via a number of different outlets. One of those is certainly live streaming top matches on platforms like YouTube or Twitch. And, while this excitement may seem unnecessary to casual observers, there are actually millions of people who follow these gamers, including the next generation.
While we don’t want to place too much pressure on any educators starting new STEM programs, there are some key suggestions we can provide. The first of those is to decide on and define the direction of the STEM program, including its identity, purposes, and objectives, which often means that the learning experiences should reflect real-world problem solving.
Equipping students with the job skills for the future is a challenge because we don’t necessarily know what life in the future workforce will be like. For up to nine weeks this fall, Liz and other educators will be working with hundreds of different elementary students to introduce them to new STEM opportunities, projects, and interactive assignments. The end goal involves inspiring these kids to utilize their new insights as inspiration for potentially pursuing different STEM opportunities in various industries in the future.
STEM education is obviously a huge part of 21st century instruction and we know how important these experiences are for students. The hard and soft skills they learn throughout elementary, middle, and high school often help them transition into a future career and, for more and more of them, that career might be very closely related to STEM.
Since many students missed out on furthering their computer science development during the pandemic, online coding environments began booming as educators looked for alternative options to ensure they didn’t fully lose the skills they’d developed from previous experiences. One of those online coding tools is Robotify and it’s this week’s Rising Resource!
As always, we’re excited to see how the grant will help Bonni and her colleagues realize their collective mission of making greater progress in their STEM education programs. According to her, they’ve spent many years talking about how to evolve their STEM offerings and now find themselves in the right position to truly make it happen for their students.
All indications are that coding will continue to be an absolutely essential skill for today’s students to master. It’s not the only one, however, as we know that soft skills are still very important but, based on the current and future economy, there’s no indication that students who spend time bolstering coding skills will be learning something that’s outdated.
Each of the kits comes with its own compatible set of curriculum. Following detailed project guides displayed in 3D on the UKIT app, students can explore STEM topics in a very hands-on way. Plus, in the lessons, educators can cover everything from force and motion to earth science and natural disasters with hands-on building and collaboration.
